This individual will play an integral role in the patient's surgery experience. The Surgical Counselor is responsible for administering practice marketing and business development for surgery. This individual provides face-to-face screening, education, and counseling to patients regarding the benefits of IOL lens options, including elective options with advanced-technology lenses. In addition, the counselor is responsible for discussing cost and payment options for these elective services and providing meaningful insight into each procedure and how the procedure will impact their eyesight. For cataract procedures, discuss premium lenses compared to a standard lens.

 

Responsibilities

What You Will Do:

  • Must be patient service focused with the ability to deliver high patient satisfaction. 
  • Excellent communications skills required, ability to develop relationships with patients to provide a positive experience. 
  • Ability and confidence to present pricing and financing. 
  • Ophthalmic/optometric experience is preferred but not required. 
  • Proficient with standard office equipment and software (Word & Excel); multi-task comfortably; ability to work with a high degree of professionalism. 
  • Exemplary organizational skills: willingness to be cross-trained and fill in for other staff members. 
  • Implements the surgical marketing objectives and motivates support staff to participate.
  • Participates in staff training on surgery.
  • Acts as key contact person for all surgery inquiries, including those from patients, physicians, and staff members.
  • Provider Relations
  • Communicates optometric referrals via follow-up correspondence, educational materials, and reporting.
  • Maintains process for co-management of patients, including pre- and post-op protocols, forms for co-management, educational materials and optometric staff training.
  • Administrative Duties
  • Maintains and monitors internal systems (i.e., tracking of new patient scheduling, patient correspondence, and referral source follow-up).
  • Maintains an internal patient database; identifies target patients for mailings and telephone calls.

Qualifications

 What You Will Bring: 

  • Liaison to patients; assist with completion of paperwork; create, update, and maintain accurate patient files; update database systems, schedule and confirm appointments as necessary.
  • Assist patients regarding surgery dates, book patients for consultations and surgery, discuss pre and post-op instructions with patients. 
  • Discuss surgical cost with patients, based on their benefits and answer questions about payment and financing.  
  • Handle timely follow-up to prospective, current and past patients. 
  • Prepare patient charts for surgery and provide caring help to patients before, during and after surgery. 
  • Collect surgery payments; process financing through financial software programs; maintain monthly and yearly financial reports. 
  • Ensure all patients, at all times, have a positive experience while in the office or on the phone. 

$18.00 - $21.00 an hour applies to employees who are based in the state of Maryland.

 

Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including location, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as, but not limited to full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility, annual educational reimbursement, and various paid time off benefits, such as PTO).
